Chamber Spotlight – Pomme de Terre Golf Club
By: Sara Lundquist, Director, Morris Area Chamber of Commerce
For over a century, Pomme de Terre Golf Club has been a cherished part of the Morris community, offering a welcoming space for golfers of all skill levels. Founded in 1923 by local golf enthusiasts, the club was created with the vision of building a dedicated course where people could enjoy the game, socialize, and be part of a thriving golf community. That vision continues to flourish today, as the club remains a premier golfing destination in Stevens County.
Named after Pomme de Terre Lake and River, the club’s name pays homage to the area’s rich history and natural beauty. Originally a modest nine-hole sand-greens course, Pomme de Terre has transformed into an 18-hole championship layout. A key figure in this transformation was renowned golf course architect Joel Goldstrand, whose expertise helped shape the course into the challenging yet enjoyable experience it is today. His vision ensured that Pomme de Terre would remain a premier golfing destination for generations to come.
At the heart of Pomme de Terre Golf Club there is a strong commitment to community, sportsmanship, and inclusivity. The club welcomes golfers of all ages and abilities, offering a range of services that set it apart. Beyond the well-maintained fairways and greens, the club provides a driving range, putting green, and a clubhouse with a bar and event space open to the public. Golfers can participate in leagues, lessons, and a variety of tournaments throughout the season. Popular events include the Tuesday Night Pick-Up League, Women’s and Men’s Scrambles, and the highly anticipated Glow Golf After Dark, which brings a fun, illuminated twist to evening play.
Pomme de Terre Golf Club is more than just a place to play golf, it’s a vital part of the community. The club has long been a hub for social gatherings, charity fundraisers, and youth programs. It has proudly hosted events such as the Firemen’s Fundraiser, the Hancock Athletic Boosters Fundraiser, the Minnesota Junior PGA Tournament, the Cougar Alumni Tournament, the Superior Outing, the Tiger Basketball Tournament, and St. Mary’s Fundraiser. These tournaments not only bring the community together but also help support local causes. The club is excited to announce that these fundraisers will return this season, along with new additions to expand its outreach efforts.
One of the club’s proudest achievements is its dedication to fostering the next generation of golfers through the Pomme de Terre Junior Golf Association. This program provides young golfers with access to lessons, tournaments, and mentorship opportunities, ensuring they have the resources to develop their skills and passion for the game. The club invites the community to support these efforts through donations at GiveMN, helping to keep golf accessible to all young players.
Like many Minnesota golf courses, Pomme de Terre faces the challenge of a short and unpredictable golf season. Weather events such as heavy spring rains, summer storms, and early snowfalls have occasionally disrupted play. However, the club remains committed to keeping the course in excellent condition year after year, ensuring that golfers always have the best possible playing experience.
Looking toward the future, Pomme de Terre Golf Club is exploring new opportunities for growth and innovation. With the recent appointment of manager Ryan Sproul in 2024, the club is focused on enhancing course conditions, expanding youth programs, and attracting more golfers through tournaments and social events. Additionally, the club is in the early stages of developing partnerships with other Chamber members to create travel packages that position Stevens County as a premier weekend destination for metro-area golfers. By combining golf with local attractions, dining, and lodging, the club aims to showcase everything the community has to offer.
With a rich history, a strong commitment to community involvement, and exciting plans for the future, Pomme de Terre Golf Club continues to be a treasured asset in Morris. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just picking up a club for the first time, the club offers something for everyone. As they embrace innovation while staying true to their century-old values, Pomme de Terre Golf Club is truly “On Top of the World” when it comes to growing the game and bringing people together.
