Internationally acclaimed guitarist José Manuel Lezcano brings an eclectic program to the Morris Public Library on Saturday, May 21 2pm.
Currently serving as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Morris, Dr. Lezcano’s wide-ranging program, entitled “From Pop to Bach, from Wichitaw to Leipzig,” features movements from Bach’s first Cello Suite, and arrangements of pop hits by Steve Wonder and Jimmy Webb (including Webb’s “Wichitaw Lineman,” sung by Glenn Campbell). The Cuban-born guitarist will play Spanish music, including Romero’s Alegrias, Borge’s Moorish Fountain, and Tarrega’s Danza Mora, works inspired by Flamenco dances. Latin American pieces by Cuban composer Leo Brouwer and French guitarist Roland Dyen’s “Tango en Skai,” and Lezcano’s own Etudes in Time of Covid, composed during the 2020 lockdown, round out the program. The twice Grammy-nominated guitarist and composer has delighted audiences on four continents. His programs featuring traditional and Latin American repertoire, and his own original compositions have taken him as recitalist, collaborative musician, and concerto soloist from Carnegie Recital Hall and the North-South Consonance Series in New York City to major venues and festivals in Cuba, Spain, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, China, Crete, Trinidad & Tobago, the Czech Republic and Germany.
