SUMMARY:PATHMARKING: A MUSICAL CELEBRATION FOR INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
DESCRIPTION:The University of Minnesota Morris invites you to a voice recital on Wednesday\, March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day. \n“Pathmarking” will feature works by American women composers which highlight the societal contributions and ideas of women who have created a pathway for those who follow. The program includes two solo works by Rosephanye Powell\, Miss Wheatley’s Garden\, which celebrates the lineage of Phillis Wheatley\, America’s first African-American poet\, and Then\, Here & Now\, four art songs which re-imagine African-American spiritual texts. The Long View by Patrice Michaels\, is a cycle of nine songs that serve in painting a portrait of the life and career of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg\, highlighting issues of gender and race equity\, specifically. There will be three choral works for treble voices that will be sung by a selective choir comprised of students\, faculty\, and staff in the UMN Morris community. The poetry of Nikita Gill and Margaret Walker\, and the words of Malala Yousafzai are set with strength\, conviction\, and fire by composers Melissa Dunphy\, Andrea Ramsey\, and Joan Szymko. \nThe performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the HFA Recital Hall on the UMN Morris campus.  A pre-concert talk by Dr. Denise Odello will be held at 6:45 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
