DESCRIPTION:The University of Minnesota Morris will hold a teach-in about the history and impact of Native American boarding schools\, including the ones that operated on our campus site\, on Saturday\, Nov. 18 in Imholte Hall room 109.  \nThe keynote speaker is Sandy White Hawk\, a Sicangu Lakota adoptee from the Rosebud Reservation\, South Dakota. White Hawk is the founder and Director of First Nations Repatriation Institute (FNRI). FNRI’s goal is to create a resource for First Nations people impacted by foster care or adoption to return home\, reconnect\, and reclaim their identity.  The Institute also serves as a resource to enhance the knowledge and skills of practitioners who serve First Nations people. \nOther educational speakers for the event are Gabe Desrosiers\, Anishinaabe; Dorothy Jeffery; and Dennis Jeffy\, Diné \nThe event begins at 8:45 a.m. with a light breakfast\, followed by a blessing and welcome at 9 a.m.\, then first speaker at 9:10 a.m. Following the keynote\, lunch will be served in Oyate Hall. \nFor those unable to attend in person\, the Teach-In will also be available via Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the Office of Community Engagement hosts a Day of Service in September. The goal of the event is to introduce students to volunteer opportunities and agencies in the community and to provide needed services for those agencies. The day includes pre-service training\, a hands-on service opportunity\, reflection\, and snacks.\nPast projects have included painting the floor of the Morris Theatre\, cleaning trash and weeding the pocket garden in downtown Morris\, river clean up along the Pomme De Terre river\, and playing bingo at Grandview nursing home.  \nPeople interested in volunteering would meet at Oyate Hall on campus at 12:30p for preparation for various sites we serve; at 2p people would take provided transportation to their site; and we would finish up returning to Federated Church for a shared meal at 5pm.

DESCRIPTION:Siama’s Congo Roots\nTuesday\, June 27th\, 10:30 am\nFeel-good sounds from the heart of Africa  \nOn this very special musical journey to Africa\, Siama plays guitar and traditional instruments like Mbira (thumb piano) and Balafon (marimba) while Dallas Johnson encourages everyone to sing along in Kikongo\, Lingala & English and they both share fun stories that bring Siama’s rural homeland to life. This program is especially designed for kids and families but it’s enjoyed by everyone so don’t miss it!\nThis program is sponsored by Morris Public Library and Viking Library System. This project was funded in part or in whole with monies from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage fund.
